CONCEPT ENGINEERING AND CLEANING MACHINERY

Information

ro-ro ferry boat to a quay

A ship lies to the quay. The bow of the ship is guided to the quay landing bridge between two coved slackening structures. The landing bridge, part of the fixed docking installation, is already lowered onto the unloading deck of the ferry. To starboard, halfway the hull a floating slackening structure is located, heavy poles are driven into the port basin. This floating system follows tidal movements. In this case the structure already exists. The magnetic mooring system forms part and is adapted to - this structure. Note that this model is just an example for illustration adapted to an existing slackening structure.

Detail of  slackening structure

Both pontoon and slackening structure follow tidal movements. In this illustration permanent magnets have been coupled to the ferry. The holding force for this configuration is approx. 1260 kN (126 tonnes). Theoretically this system is strong enough for mooring this reference boat during wind strength 12bft, calculating the wind load perpendicular to the ship. Understand that in such weather conditions the ferry wont depart and will be secured following a safety mooring protocol.

Permanent magnets on a pontoon

Detail of the pontoon, which twists and shifts along a strong steel pile. The controllable magnets are attached to the ship. Possibly to the ships hull a additional strengthening plate has been assembled. In this example the number of magnets is 18, this number is adapted on the size of the ship and the requirements of the situation on the specific location.

Hydraulic cylinder replaces elastic hawser

Top view of the installation. The ship is pulled against the slackening structure: the ferry lies moored. The hydraulic cylinder is indicated purple. Additional elements in the hydraulic systems bring in certain elasticity into the system. This will absorb the energy caused by small movements of the ship. In situations where precise mooring is required, for instance during the handling of containers by the container crane, this elasticity may be adjusted to a more rigid level.

#Calculations which underpin this concept have been based on an existing situation and on supplied data by the shipping company. The shown images serve for the illustration of the concept and reflect a random ferry boat which is representative for other ferry boats.
# The shown elaboration is for the illustration of an application with the connection principle of permanent magnets. Another elaboration, such as integration in embankments is possible. These are added soon to this site.
